Circa 1890, mahogany case with ormolu mounts, brass and silverplate face with painted moon dial, black enamel Roman numerals, subsidiary second dial and calendar dial, with retailer's label reading "J. C. Grogan, Pittsburg", marked "Walter H. Durfee, R.I., Providence" under moon dial and with four other subsequent Durfee marks including twice to the top edge of the rear works plate, and twice to the saddle-board, the hood with a hinged beveled glass tombstone door flanked by fully turned spiral columns, the case with foliate carved molding and trim, hinged tombstone waist door with reeded fan carving over a rectangular beveled glass window featuring a signature Durfee open lion mouth escutcheon, flanked by repeating fully carved spiral twist columns, base front panel with relief carved reeded rosette with repeating fully carved spiral twist columns supported by bold paw feet, with pendulum, two weights supported by signature six-spoke weight pulleys, brass finials, case key, clock key.

98 x 24 x 14 in.

Movement features a Graham dead beat escapement, maintaining power mechanism, and a half hour passive strike, all rarely found on two-weight clocks. A copy of “Walter Durfee And His Clocks” by Owen and Jo Burt, accompanies this lot. Pattern 42 is covered on pages 31-34.

In good working order at time of consignment; old surface with age appropriate warm toning; rubbing to silverplate face and flaking to the painted dial; later but appropriate brass finials.
