Qing dynasty (1644-1912), circa 1820, a tall jar with curved hexagonal sides and a hexagonal domed cover with gilt foo lion finial, hand painted in famille rose palette with detailed scenes of noble and everyday figures engaged in a number of activities from daily tasks to elegant gatherings, the upper scenes contrasting with the lower scenes, very detailed faces of figures and clothing, faces are flush with porcelain while other enamels are slightly raised, unglazed underside, later metal band to rim of jar with two vertical closures to cover.
HOA 26 1/2 in.
A few areas of repainting around the rim of the cover, a possible area of professional restoration to one side panel (no evidence of any repair to the interior of jar), later gilt applied over all on the foo lion finial, some rubbing and loss to gilt on edges; some loss to enamels along foot; chip with loss to cover interior; a few nicks to foo lion finial; green felt with tear to underside; later metal band to rim of jar and two vertical closures to cover.
