Joanne Gauthier was born in Trois-Rivières, Québec in 1962. Joanne studied Decorative Arts at the Cégep de Trois-Rivières and then received her Bachelor’s Degree at the Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières in 1987. From 1989 to 1997, she taught drawing and painting in the municipality of St-Augustin-de-Desmaures.

Gauthier's charming and vibrant paintings are created through a time-consuming and exact process. She begins each painting with a layer of acrylic paste on a canva. She then carves into the paste and then applies three water and oil based paint layers, coupled with metallic leaf to create a luminous stained glass appearance.
