Born in Iowa, Robert Horsfall moved to Cincinnati where he studied under L.S. Lutz and Thomas S. Noble. In 1886 he attended the Cincinnati Art Academy and in 1891 traveled to Munich and Paris to continue his studies. He returned to Cincinnati in 1893 and began working as a decorator for Rookwood Pottery for the next two years.

Horsfall is best known for his wildlife illustrations. He worked for such prominent institutions as the the American Museum of Natural History, the Peabody Museum of Natural History, the United States National Museum, and the Smithsonian Institute. He illustrated and authored over thirty books on birds and mammals. In 1951, an exhibit of forty bird paintings by Bruce Horsfall was held at the Cincinnati Gas and Electric Company and was sponsored by The Audubon Society.
