Raised in Grand Rapids, Michigan, Will Howe Foote was encouraged by his uncle and father, a prominent furniture company executive, to further his artistic endeavors through study at the Art Institute of Chicago in 1894. Continued study at the Art Students League in New York and the Académie Julian in Paris, led Will to Frank Vincent DuMond at the Old Lyme Colony. He became influenced by this emerging impressionist movement modeled after the French Barbizon School, and it was here Will met his wife, Helen Kirtland Freeman, also a painter at Old Lyme.
Will is best known for his impressionist landscapes, interiors, and figurative works, which he exhibited at the Paris Salon, the Lyme Art Association, and regularly at the National Academy of Design. His paintings are included in private and museum collections, including the Smithsonian American At Museum in Washington, D.C. and The Florence Griswold Museum in Old Lyme, Connecticut.
