.58 caliber single shot, percussion, 40 in. round barrel with two-leaf rear sight, fixed front sight, iron mounts throughout, lockplate marked with eagle and U.S. SPRINGFIELD before the hammer and 1864 behind; walnut stock secures barrel with three bands and is fitted with a tulip head ramrod; U S on buttplate tang; the triangular bayonet, 19 in. overall, with U S marking, the leather scabbard with brass tip.
Overall length 55-1/2 in.
Private Collection, Greensboro, North Carolina Verbal history claims these weapons were found in a Pennsylvania barn being demolished south of Gettysburg. This is possible, however they certainly post-date the battle for which the area is best known.
Working action; the lockplate possibly a replacement; light oxidation to metal elements; barrel with some powder pits; stock intact with expected marks from use. Overall good condition.
