John Semon was born in Cleveland, Ohio and remained there for the majority of his life. He was an early member of the Cleveland Art Club, the Society of Cleveland Artists and a co-founder of the Brush & Palette Club. Additionally, Semon was an instructor in landscape painting at the Western Reserve School of Design.

Semon is best known for his forest interiors. The present painting likely dates to his late period when he had moved to Tinker's Creek, near the village of Bedford.
