Corolla, North Carolina, his decoys resemble those made in the Churches Island school, however, they are carved differently as seen in the accentuated the cheeks and bodies having a steep drop to the paddle tail.

Val moved to Corolla in the 1890's where he made a living fishing and trapping muskrats. It was there when he dabbled in market hunting and decoy making. He was a gifted carpenter and excelled in making furniture. He was also involved in the construction of the Whalehead Club.
