An accomplished portrait of a distinguished woman, depicted seated in three-quarter length. Despite her somber attire, she is depicted as a wealthy woman, with fine gloves, gold rings and pearl earrings.
Some paint loss along top edge of canvas; minor paint flaking to left edge of canvas near chair back; several small paint flakes to dark ground at right of seated figure; abrasions to canvas along lower edge near frame; allover stable craquelure; heavy later varnish, but evidence of some competent retouch to sitter's nose and forehead and proper left hand is visible under UV light, area of retouch to proper left edge of falling band; some rubbing and wear to frame.
