Lot Details & Additional Photographs
Documentary photograph akin to Capa's "Omaha Beach Secured" in which Americans and their allies stake a no-nonsense claim on Nazi-occupied Europe. The present image is apparently unique as an original period print and is stamped "LIFE Photo by Robert Capa" on the back above a clipped newspaper caption that reads "General view of the Allied beachhead shortly after D-Day, showing shipping inshore, and breakwater made of sunken Liberty ships. D25-1-C-7-120 Capa Pool Photo." Additional stamps present are as follows: "Passed for publication Photo 102 / 23 Oct 1944 Name...G. No 47 SHAEF (Supreme Headquarters Allied Expeditionary Force) Field Censor"; "Dec 1944"; "Used in LIFE Book / U.S History - Vol. eleven / Page 135" (also in manuscript above); "Purcell Book"; "Winston Churchill War Book / p 449" as well as several indiscernible numbers and letters used by publishers, in double-sided frame.
