From the Collection of the late John Davis, Durham, North Carolina Jacob Kainen studied at The Art Students League and Pratt Institute in New York. However, he credited his self-studies of old masters as his most profound teachers. In 1942, he moved to Washington, D.C. where he remained until his death in 2001. He is best known for his painterly abstractions which are in numerous prominent collections including the Smithsonian American Art Museum, Washington, D.C.; Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Yale University Museum, New Haven, Connecticut; and the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York.
