John Wesley Carpenter (b.1843?-? NC and VA), Two One Gallon Jugs

The first jug is salt glazed stoneware with rounded lip, grooved applied strap handle, four decorative incised bands at the shoulder below an area of salt spotting, weak stamp "JC" at front.
The second jug is ovoid with decorative inscribed lines at upper and lower shoulder, strong stamp "J.W. CARPENTER / WILES NC".

First Jug: Rim chip and upper left handle scrape; firing line under handle attachment; base roughness with nicks. Second Jug: restoration to rim and handle; quartz pop to underside.
