This boxed set includes a Liberty Seated 1860-O half dollar struck under United States authority, an 1861-O half dollar struck under Louisiana authority, and an 1861-O half dollar struck under Confederate States authority. These coins reflect the rapidly changing political status of a Southern state during the months leading up to the Civil War. The coins are authenticated and conserved by Numismatic Guaranty Corporation without a numerical grade, noting that they are "Shipwreck Effect" Uncirculated coins. The encapsulated coins are held in a custom presentation box within a library slipcase.

These silver half dollars were salvaged by Odyssey Marine Exploration from the wreck of the SS
Republic, which went down off the Georgia coast while sailing from New York to New Orleans in October 1865.
