America was the surprise winner of a prestigious race around Britain's Isle of Wight. The yacht's fame grew to such an extent that the America's Cup race was named after her. During the Civil War the
America was pressed into Confederate service before falling into Union hands. After the war, former Union general and wealthy politician Benjamin Butler came to own the vessel. During the first decades of the 20th century, the storied
America limped on as a ward of the U.S. government before she was finally scuttled in 1945 due to unavailable funding.
