This painting bears strong resemblance to a work by Charles Ernest Butler (1864-1933) depicting the ill-fated lovers from Germanic and Norse legend. The painting depicts the first meeting of the dragon-slaying hero and wise and magical woman from the 13th century sagas.

Several scattered surface abrasions and small punctures to canvas; some surface grime.
