Carl Strathmann was a painter, draftsman, illustrator and designer of furntiureand textiles. Closely associated with the symbolists, his fantastical and highly decorative paintings were described as "grotesque Art Nouveau" in a 1976 exhibition of his paintings at the Rheinisches Landesmuseum in Bonn.

In 2019, the Münchner Stadtmuseum presented an exhibition of Strathmann's works.
