Two 19th Century Cary-Gould Cased Compound Pocket Microscopes, Signed

England, second quarter 19th century, both instruments' rackwork adjustment signed "Cary, LONDON," the smaller kit mounting to via the clasp area of the open mahogany box (box dimensions 3 3/4 x 3 in.), the larger atop a closed mahogany case (2 x 7 3/4 x 6 in.), sets outfitted with various accessories.

William Cary (British, 1759-1825) settled in London at 182 Strand in 1785. His workshop produced numerous astronomical and optical instruments. Charles Gould (British, 1786-1849) was his manufacturer. Once Gould's apprenticeship was carried out with William Cary, he would succeed him upon his death in 1825 and go on to patent this smaller design in 1826.

Some handling wear to case interior and exterior; some spotting and surface grime to instruments; crack to smaller set's illumination mirror; both sets missing some original accoutrements (smaller more complete), larger mahogany case with some inlay loss glued repairs to top.
