Frederic Matys Thursz was born in Casablanca, Morocco in 1930 and moved with his parents to the United States in 1941. He earned his BFA from Queens College and his MFA from Columbia University. In 1957, he earned a doctorate in art history at the Institute of Art and Archeology in Paris, France.

Frederic Thursz settled in Lexington, Kentucky. He held a teaching position at the University of Kentucky from 1958 to 1968. He later taught at the Aspen School of Contemporary Art, the Kingsborough Community College and the New York Studio School of Drawing, Painting and Sculpture.

At the time of his death, Thursz was living and painting in Paris, and also maintained a studio in Ossining, New York.
