Early Arctic Explorer Isaac Israel Hayes Autograph Note Signed

On trimmed Smithsonian Institution ruled letterhead with engraved profile of James Smithson, the manuscript reading "Faithfully yours I. I. Hayes Feb 21st 1862, Smithsonian Institution Washington D.C."

Born to Quaker farmers in Pennsylvania, I. I. Hayes (1832-1881) is best remembered for his work as an early Arctic explorer and lecturer. When the Civil War began, Hayes put his medical training to use and became a highly regarded Union Army surgeon.
