Vasarely is known as the grandfather and leader of the Op-art movement. He was born in Pécs, Hungary in 1906, and after studying under the artist Sánor Bortnyik at the Mühely Academy he moved to Paris to work in graphic arts, where he worked the remainder of his life. After World War II, Vasarely had his first important Paris exhibition at the Galerie Denise René and decided to leave graphic arts to focus on developing his own signature style in painting which utilized the principles of optical illusion and abstract shapes and bold colors. The 1965 exhibition The Responsive Eye at the Museum of Modern Art, New York consecrated his international recognition as the leader of the Op-art movement. Vasarely received numerous prestigious awards throughout the international art world scene, and influenced many later artists. His paintings are held in the most influential modern art museums across the world.
