Likely mid-20th century, cast iron, double-sided figural medallion framed behind glass; this work is after the infamous commemorative medal designed by Karl Goetz in August 1915 to mark the sinking of the Cunard liner
Lusitania by a German U-boat on 7 May 1915.
2 in. medallion; frame 9 3/4 x 9 3/4 in.
From the Mäder and Meder family Estates, New York and Virginia This medallion has the original May 5th date that was made in error. 300,000 later British copies of the medallion with the corrected date were widely distributed as part of a concerted anti-German propaganda campaign.
