Sylvanus Hartsoe (Lincoln County, 1850-1926), Two Gallon Jar

Alkaline glazed stoneware, having a rounded rim above applied lug handles, over a wide incised band, heavy waves of rutile highlight the surface, stamped on one handle "SLH" and marked "2" below that handle.

11 1/2 x 7 1/2 in.

A high content of the mineral rutile produces a blue-white coloration when combined with iron in a reduction atmosphere.
