English Mahogany Campaign Chest Posthumously Naming General William Tryon

19th century, the rectangular case featuring a hinged lid with shaped brass mounts at corners and brass straps at each edge; a central brass plaque is engraved "To / His Excellency Major / General William Tryon / &c &c &c"; open interior, applied brass handles to each side, central applied brass plate plaque with slide escutcheon cover, brass straps continuing to bottom corners and each case edge.

William Tryon (1729-1788) was the colonial Governor of North Carolina and, later, New York. He also served the crown in a military capacity during the American Revolution. Tryon died in London after the war and perhaps this campaign chest was commissioned by a descendant in order to preserve the general's personal possessions for posterity.

Top with wear and marring; hinges reset (possibly later); later trim to underside serving as a recessed base.
