Sight size 35-1/2 x 28-1/2 in.; Frame dimensions 39-1/4 x 32-1/4 in.

This portrait is modeled on a Matthew Brady image that was converted into a steel engraving for placement in The Gallery of Illustrious Americans, Containing the Portraits and Biographical Sketches of Twenty-four of the Most Eminent Citizens of the American Republic Since the Death of Washington (New York: Brady, D'Avignon and Company, 1850).

The canvas is laid to a board and supported by a later chipboard backing; some in-painting and marks.
