Born in Denmark, Karl Termohlen moved to the United States at the end of the 19th century. A noted Tonalist, he is best known for his mysterious and luminous nocturnes, such as the one offered here. Termohlen exhibited at the Art Institute of Chicago and the Pennslyvania Academy of the Fine Arts.

One patched hole visible en verso at lower right edge with associated retouching, aging cracks and some minor areas of loss.
