Lot Details & Additional Photographs
England, 19th century, of rectangular shape with gilt penwork, the scene depicts Wellington, at Waterloo, leading a charge against the French, painted in polychrome enamels against a black field, not signed.
30 1/2 in.
From a Private Collection, Washington, D.C. Wellington wore a similar hat at the Battle of Waterloo (1815). He waved it to signal a general advance. The hat with distinctive cockade is property of the National Army Museum, Britain.
Loss of gilt to the border flowers; peeling of paint around the edges; several touch-ups which do not detract from interest engendered by the general scene; surface wear to the underside and edges.
