Marcus Terentius Varro (116-27 BCE) was a Roman scholar and author best known for De lingua latina (On the Latin Language) and De re rustica (On Agriculture), both included in this collection. Grässe writes about this line on page 12 of this edition: 'Here si querelis...' that he notes that Scaliger attributes to an ancient poet. (Grässe 6.2/262).
