James Gibson was an original member of the Highwaymen, a group of young African-American landscape painters in Florida who began producing art in the 1950s. The group included Gibson, Alfred Hair, Harold Newton, Livingston Roberts, and Mary Ann Carroll. They painted on inexpensive materials such as Upson board and roofer's materials. They worked out of their cars, traveled the state's coast, and sold their works from door to door. Today, the group is revered for its contributions to the American folk art tradition.

Flake to lower register, some paper residue to upper edge (likely in the making), areas of residue at upper right edge, light grime; light wear to frame.
