Jacob Wagner was born in Germany and immigrated to the United States with his parents at the age of four. His family settled in Boston, where Wagner would remain throughout his lifetime. He showed artistic talent from a young age, but trained first as a frame maker and worked for several art stores. Encouraged by one of his employers, E. Adam Doll of the prominent Doll & Richards gallery in Boston, Wagner enrolled at the Lowell Institute and then the School of the Museum of Fine Arts.

Wagner was dedicated to his painting practice, while working as an art restorer and frame maker. He painted landscapes and later became a sought after portrait painter. He exhibited extensively during his lifetime and was a member of the Boston Water Color Society and the Boston Art Club.

Light age cracking, otherwise good estate condition; light wear to frame.
