From a Significant Boston Silver Collector

One of the leading artistic designers of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Louis Comfort Tiffany (1848-1933) was acclaimed not only for his work in glass, but also in most other artistic fields. His oeuvre includes painted works, metal craft, stained glass, favrile glass designs, and jewelry creations. Taking inspiration from the Art Nouveau and Aesthetic Movements and from nature in his stained art and glass designs, he brought these same sentimentalities to his jewelry. He became Tiffany & Company's first design director following the death of his father, Charles Lewis Tiffany, in 1902, at which time he began to design his own jewelry. In 1907, he moved his Tiffany Art Jewelry to Tiffany & Company. Working in collaboration with enamelist Julia Munson until 1914, he then employed artist Margreta (Meta) Katherine Overbeck, who worked as a designer and directed the jewelry department until Tiffany's death in 1933. It is possible that this necklace was a design concept of both Meta and Tiffany with its cool color palette, the filigree scrolls, and the combination of the semi-precious moonstones and Montana sapphires.

Good estate condition; sapphires with minute nicks and abrasions visible under 10x magnification.
