The famous rig of root head willet were stored in the rafters of a boat house in 1935 at the time Meekins joined the US Coast Guard. They were not taken down until 1980. At the age of ninety-seven, Manson Meekins received the prestigious The Order of the Long Leaf Pine Award signed by the governor of North Carolina.
