Originally from Little Rock, Arkansas, Jim Carson was raised in Memphis, Tennessee. After earning a PhD in theoretical chemistry from NYU and accepting a postdoctoral fellowship at Princeton, where he later served on the faculty for two years, Carson decided to change his career from science to art.

Carson studied at the Art Students League of New York while working at Princeton. He continued his studies with several well-known illustrators and painters, and in 1974 began illustrating covers for western novels for major publishing houses in New York. In 1980, Carson founded his own agency representing commercial illustrators. It was during this same time that he began painting and selling western historical paintings.

Jim Carson is the recipient of numerous awards for his fine art and illustrations. He and his wife split their time between Saluda, North Carolina and Cave Creek, Arizona.
