Dick Beer was born in London and was raised by his father, an artist who was commissioned by English aristocracy to paint portraits of racehorses. When Beer was fifteen, both parents tragically died, and the artist went to live with a priest in Sweden. His artistic studies began at Althin's Painting School in 1908 and continued at the Academy of Fine Arts in 1910, before moving to Paris in 1912. He studied in France at the Academy Colarossi and Academy Grande Chaumière. When the French army mobilized in August 1914, Beer enrolled as a volunteer and was admitted to the French Foreign Legion. He was injured the following year and spent time at the Château de Rochefort where he resumed painting. Following World War I, Beer's art changed significantly, transitioning from an impressionistic style to a more expressionist style with the growing influence of cubism.

Good estate condition, minor losses to frame.
