Antonio Salas Avilés was a highly regarded Ecuadorian painter who ushered in a family dynasty of artists. Salas trained in the workshops of two Quito school painters, Bernardo Rodríguez and Manuel Samaniego. He went on to establish his own workshop, where 16 of his 20 children, along with other artists, collaborated.

Salas found great success with his artwork. He was well known for his portraits, religious and genre paintings. This painting was likely a commission and copied from a period engraving.

Stable craquelure; minor mildew to surface; chipping, crazing and some discoloration to frame.
