Edo period (1615-1868), mineral pigments, gold and gold leaf on paper, includes 16 album leaves, one being two leaves connected, each leaf is very finely painted in the characteristic Tosa school style with scenes inspired by popular Japanese literature such as theTale of Genji, bordered at the top and bottom with applied gold maki-e in the form of clouds, the paper is backed onto later golden paper, behind many of the leaves are multiple layers of thin handmade paper with black ink writing in running script, presented loose.

Each 9 3/4 x 7 in., Double Page 9 1/4 x 13 1/4 in.

Overall very good condition; scattered light scratches and losses to pigments; toning to paper; four with worm holes; two with tears.
