Meiji period (1868-1912), carved hardwood panels with intricate pierced foliate carvings above and below central panels, faux grain paint and gilt highlights, central panels with four figures dressed as samurai presented in ivory and bone inlays against a moriage gold ground, decorated to the reverse in gilt on black lacquer with the "Four Gentlemen" flora: plum, orchid, bamboo, and chrysanthemum, representing ideal virtues of a gentleman scholar in Asia.
