Attributed to Williamsburg, possibly workshop of Anthony Hay, circa 1760, both chairs with shaped crest rail and stiles, scratch beaded edge, distinctive carved and pierced back splat set within a raised molded rear seat rail, upholstered slip seat, molded flush seat rails, front straight legs with molded corner, down-swept rear legs, flush stretcher base.
First 37 x 21.5 x 21.5 in., seat height 17 in.; Second 37 x 21.75 x 21.5 in., seat height 17 in.

First chair (seat rail numbered XXIII): break and repair to right stile at crest; later corner brace blocks; shrinkage crack to left front knee.
Second chair: tight shrinkage split at crest rail; later corner blocks (missing two blocks); as a distinction this chair features inside chamfered legs and is marked with an upside-down V to interior rail.
