This early decoy won the Best Shorebird award at the 2018 Core Sound Vintage Decoy Exhibition. It has a wonderfully dry surface and diminutive form. Wescott was born and raised in Manteo. He survived the ravages of the Civil War as a young child and after high school, he joined the Life-Saving Service. He became caretaker of the New Inlet Life Saving Station which today would be in the middle of the Pea Island Refuge. There he hunted shorebirds in the tidal and marsh flats.
