Possibly Philadelphia, circa 1780, spruce secondary, shaped and relief carved crest rail, intricate pierced and carved back splat featuring central rosette and lower quatrefoil, set within a molded shoe, stiles with scratch bead, flush seat rails with serpentine front, slip seat, straight molded front legs with inside chamfer, down-swept rear legs, stretcher base.

38.5 x 21.5 x 20.25 in., seat height 17.5 in.

Both chairs with shrinkage splits to back splat; break and repair at one chair to right stile at crest joint; one chair with break and loss at left rear foot corner; missing some corner bracing blocks; one chair missing front horizontal stretcher rail; lower leg corners with wear and loss; slip seats are old but later.
