Gary Ernest Smith was born on a cattle ranch in Baker City, Oregon. He received his BFA and MFA from Brigham Young University. Often categorized as a neo-regionalist, Smith's paintings draw heavily from his rural upbringing. He describes his work as minimalist featuring large, bold shapes and emotional color. He currently lives and paints in Highland, Utah.

Smith's paintings have been exhibited in numerous museums including the Brooklyn Museum of Art, New York, Butler Institute of American Art, Youngstown, Ohio, Denver Museum of Art and others.
