Attributed to Williamsburg, possibly workshop of Anthony Hay, circa 1770, mahogany secondary, shaped crest rail with distinctive overlaid scroll notch, shaped stiles, triple pierced splat with distinctive spur at top and carved ribbon at central section, molded rear rail, flush molded seat rail, slip seat, molded straight front legs with inside chamfer, flush stretcher base, down-swept rear legs.
36.5 x 21 x 20.5 in., seat height 16.75 in.

From the Estate of the late Dr. Larry Southworth, Fredericksburg, Virginia Robert Beverly (Beverly Manor Mansion, Staunton, Virginia) to Carter Beverly to 1830 in house. Daniel Sheffey bought with the house to Mrs. Daniel Sheffey to Mrs. Admonia Bell Bayley to Fanny Bayley King to Jane King Gilbert to 1986.

First chair: tight shrinkage cracks at corner of knees; heavy wear at feet; break and repairs at crest rail.
Second chair: break and repair at crest by stile joint; some replaced corner blocks.
Both with shrinkage cracks to central ribbon.
