Flavius Josephus (37-100 CE) was born and raised in Jerusalem. He was an historian best known for writing The Jewish War in ca. 75 CE; this and his other works provide important information about Jewish history and early Christianity, and their popularity led to their translation into several languages.

Boards with age wear including scuffs and scratches, corners rubbed, joints rubbed and with cracking, binding still sturdy; red morocco bookplate with gilt on front paste-down, free endpaper with 19th-century handwriting providing information about the previous owners, the Whitmore family; pages overall lightly toned, with foxing and occasional small stain, marginalia/underlining, finger grime, and fraying, tear or small loss at margins; a 1 1/2-in tear in frontispiece, maps with more moderate toning, some with tears and small losses, one map loose, one with small burn hole; a very good volume with crisp pages.
