Henry Byam Martin was a member of the British Royal Navy. While relatively little is known about Martin, by 1827 he had risen to the rank of Captain and was given command of HMS Carysfort. At the time much of the role of naval officers was the gathering of intelligence to further the causes of the British Empire, and skill in draftsmanship was a useful additional skill. This watercolor was part of an album of sketches made by the artist between 1826 and 1841, some of which were included in the exhibition Sailing to Byzantium: Rediscovered Sketches of Greece & Turkey by Admiral Sir Henry Byam Martin, Michael Ward, Inc., New York, New York, 1986. A copy of the exhibition's booklet is included with the lot.
