Title page in red and black; with second title page and decorated initials and head- and tail-pieces.

Lucius Annaeus Seneca the Younger, also known simply as Seneca, was a philosopher and playwright of the Roman Empire. He also served as advisor to Nero before being accused of assisting in the plot to assassinate the emperor and being ordered to take his own life. Well-known for his essays and tragedies, this folio includes philosophical writings such as De Brevitate Vitae (On the Shortness of Life), De Vita Beata (On the Happy Life), and De Ira (On Anger).

Expected age wear to boards with scratches, rubbing, edgewear, and chipping, especially at head of spine and lower board; cracking at joints, a few small wormholes concentrated at tail of spine, loose tail band and loss of headband; title page with repairs, writing, and scattered small stains, pages toned with occasional marginalia, wormhole, and minor grime or stain, with damp staining, occasionally heavy through first quarter of text and mostly light later in text; (3) small burn holes, one leaf with 1 1/4-in. tear, several leaves with small edge or corner loss. An overall good, heavy volume.
