Traditionally rendered, at left Anna is depicted reclined in a bed with three attendants. Below Anna, the infant Mary is being bathed by midwives, similarly to how the Christ child was washed by Salome in the icon of His own birth. Mary’s father, Joachim, and Anna are shown enthroned at far left embracing Mary also shown apart from the scene in icons of the Theotokos’ birth. Above these scenes, scenes from before the life of Theotokos are depicted, including Anna and Joachim embracing and flanked by scenes of the angel visiting Joachim and Anna separately to tell them of the upcoming conception. Christ enthroned in clouds at apex in holy gesture.
