JD Challenger was a contemporary artist based in Taos, New Mexico. He grew up in Oklahoma and was profoundly influenced by his step-grandfather, a member of the Choctaw Nation. Primarily self-taught, Challenger's bold paintings sensitively portray subjects wearing traditional dress and ceremonial face paint, surrounded by artifacts and scenes from Native legends and history.
