Polish painter Abraham Neumann was born in the former Russian Sierpc. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow and later at the Académie Julian in Paris. He traveled widely, visiting the Netherlands, Belgium, England, Germany, Vienna, the United States, and Palestine. In Jerusalem, he taught at the Academy of Art and Design in Bezalel.

During 1941 Neumann was detained in the Krakow Ghetto where he created self-portraits. In 1942, the artist was killed during the evacuation by the German National Socialists.
