John McAuliffe was born in Ireland, and immigrated to New York City in 1847, remaining active in the city as an artist. He began painting houses before realizing a natural talent for horse painting. He painted extensively for the American Publisher Robert Bonner and many other members of the New York elite in the late 19th century.
