By descent through the artist's family.

Charles L. A. Leroy was born in Paris in 1849. He immigrated to the United States in 1866 and settled in Chelsea, Massachusetts. He was an artist and textile designer. After his retirement, Leroy moved to Memphis where his son was active in medical research and teaching at Vanderbilt and the University of Tennessee.
