Andrew LaMar Hopkins is many things: a self-taught artist, historian, and collector. He was born in Mobile, Alabama, but has long called New Orleans home. His paintings depict historical Creole figures, primarily from the 1820s and 1830s.
Hopkins' portrait of the well known Voodoo practioner, herbalist and midwife is based on a portrait traditionally identified as Marie Laveau by George Catlin (now attributed to the New Orleans artist Jacques Amans).
Good estate condition.
